My student spoke very little at first and did not like to read aloud. A few weeks into the program, I discovered she was not fluent in English – especially reading. At the School Coordinator’s suggestion, we began reading the bilingual books provided by the program. It was a great success. I do not speak Spanish, but sometimes would suggest she read the elementary English and I would attempt Spanish and asked her to correct me. The sessions turned around immediately. – Thomson Elementary Mentor

Mentors Provide Positive Role Models for their Students I believe I served as a positive role model for my student. She was impressed with my uniform, asked questions about my work, was curious about who I am and my life. She asked me to let my hair down, and she asked me to read to her in Spanish even though she doesn't understand the language. I tried to show her that I was just a person, just like her, and she could accomplish anything she wanted to as long as she worked for it. - Bowen Elementary Mentor from the Coast Guard

On-site Coordinators Make the Program Easy and Fun The coordinators at Highland View are very helpful. There have been times when I'm stuck in a meeting and I call the coordinators to let them know I am running late or need to reschedule my reading day. They are very happy to help mentors reschedule. I really appreciate what they do to make the program a success for both the mentors and the students. – Highland View Elementary Mentor
