In less than one month 32 nations will come together for the biggest sporting event in the world - the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Everybody Wins! DC is excited that three of our very own Power Lunch students, from Walker Jones Elementary School, have the opportunity to travel to the World Cup after being selected through an essay contest.

The contest was administered by the Georgetown Grassroots Project, a student run HIV/AIDS education and awareness program targeted to D.C. area youth. The initiative was founded by former Georgetown University rower, Tyler Spencer. After implementing the 10 week long program at Walker Jones 18 middle school students were asked to write an essay based on what they had learned in the program regarding HIV/AIDS and how they could bring awareness to the community where they live. Out of the 18 students that participated in the contest only three were selected. Everybody Wins! DC is proud to announce that all three winners from the school are students in our Power Lunch program: 6th graders, Koby Smallwood, Tu’ziah Hall and Natia Bland!

“We are extremely proud of the Power Lunch students for being selected. This trip is a wonderful once in a lifetime opportunity and we wish them the very best,” said Everybody Wins! DC Executive Director, Mary Salander.  The students will be matched with students in South Africa and become pen pals prior to meeting in South Africa. During the trip they will play soccer, share stories, and work together on a project to spread awareness of the effects of HIV/AIDS in both communities.

Even though this is a great opportunity the students still need your help! They are still in need of raising funds to assist in the cost of the trip. For more information and to make a donation please visit: http://www.walkerjonesec.org/
