Reading Mentor Scores Hole-in-One & Makes Bigger Impact Through Volunteerism

When pandemonium breaks out on a golf course it’s an excellent indication that something noteworthy has happened.  When the pandemonium occurs at a tournament, like EW!DC’s South River Scramble, with hole-in-one contests, you know that someone just earned prize money or a great gift.  On July 20, 2009 Henry Umanos, Director, Trade Licensing & Compliance for General Dynamics, created the commotion with a 169 yard hole-in-one with his 6 iron and pocketed two round trip airline tickets.

The hole in one was the first for this avid player who started playing seriously about 18 years ago with his sons.

Henry has proven to be pretty special off the golf course for EW!DC.  For the past three years, since he transferred to the headquarters General Dynamics, Henry’s volunteered as a Reading Mentor in the Power Lunch program.  During his interview with Charlie Hall, Executive Vice President for Combat Systems with General Dynamics he learned that Charlie’s assistant was a Reading Mentor for the Power Lunch Program and of General Dynamics’ long time support and participation at Tyler Elementary (1001 G Street SE).  The program sparked Henry’s interest and he has been involved ever since. Henry explains his interest and the impact of the program “the students add more value to my life then I add to theirs.  It’s a neat experience to connect with a young person.”

Many of our golf enthusiasts will probably want to hear straight from Henry about his memorable shot.  Straight from Henry…

“I was playing with friends and enjoying a beautiful day.  My  irons felt good that day and the 6 iron  (club) seemed right for the 169 yard hole.  I took a nice easy swing --  the shot was a high, lazy right to left shot that landed in the middle of the green, took two bounces and disappeared.  Everyone in my group started shouting “It’s in the hole”.  I still have the hole sign in my office”.

Another interesting note is that Henry won the closest to the hole contest on the next par 3 and almost recorded another hole-in-one. Henry Umanos is an executive working at General Dynamics headquarters in Falls Church, Virginia.  General Dynamics has been a Power Lunch Partner for thirteen years participating at both Tyler Elementary and Key Elementary (2300 Key Boulevard, Arlington, VA).  The General Dynamics EW!DC partnership was nominated for the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy 2008 Excellence in Corporate Philanthropy Awards- Nonprofit Partner Award.
