Everybody Wins! DC is honored to have received the 2008 Mayor’s Community Service Award. This annual award rewards one government agency, nonprofit or faith-based organization engaged in voluntary community service utilizing volunteers to address unmet human service, educational, environmental, and public safety needs. During the past thirteen years, more than 30,000 of the District of Columbia’s most underserved students from Title I public elementary school have been paired with Reading Mentors to instill a love of reading, learning and to foster a sense of self-esteem through Everybody Wins! DC’s programs. Our mission remains simple and straightforward, yet can bring about profound change in the lives of young students: expose children to literature, give them a positive role model, inspire them to read, and you will make a difference in their lives. The award ceremony took place during the 2009 National Volunteer Week and this year’s theme in Washington, DC was “Celebrating People in Action.” Executive Director Mary Salander received the award on behalf of the organization.
