. One of Everybody Wins! DC’s primary goals is to encourage children’s interest in reading and to cultivate enthusiasm for books. Providing our students with a variety of quality books for them to take home and enjoy is one of the first steps towards that goal. The books we distribute are often the first and only books in the child’s personal library and in the child’s home.
Nationwide, 61% of low-income families have no children’s books at all in their homes. Your donation of a book will guarantee low-income, underserved youth in the Washington Metropolitan Area the means to build and continue their personal libraries. In a city with such an appalling literacy rate, the impact of putting books into homes will reach a far wider audience than just the students in our programs. Enabling students to bring home their love of reading, to share it with family members, especially younger siblings, significantly extends the reach of our successful programs.
. At each of our Power Lunch and Readers Are Leaders schools, we offer students a large variety of books that they can enjoy with their reading partners over the lunch hour. These books include picture books, beginner, emergent and advanced level books, non-fiction books, bilingual books for our many Spanish-speaking students, books of poetry and reference works, such as dictionaries and atlases.
